The European abalone (Haliotus tuberculata), or ormer, is a high value marine gastropod that is
prized for both its mother of pearl shell and its meaty steak-like flesh.

South West Abalone Growers Association (SWAGA)is a co-operative organisation set-up by industrial
members to promote sustainable development of the abalone culture industry in SW UK. An outline
of our objectives may be found in

 .

As worldwide wild stocks of abalone have diminished through over exploitation, aquaculture offers
new opportunities to grow these fascinating shellfish. Abalone can be cultured in land based
recirculation facilities or in marine cages or rigs. An outline of the species and the culture
options available are provided on the

 page.

SWAGA has produced its first Newsletter, the 'Ormer Oracle,' with articles about sea culture, industry
limitations and some of the people involved. Issue 1 for Spring 2005 can be viewed on the

 page.

The web site has been set-up to provide information to prospective abalone farmers in the UK. Setting
up a new aquaculture business can be a daunting task requiring technical and financial expertise.
A

has been produced to provide contact details for a range of organisations and
agencies in the SW that can be consulted to provide support.
